Seeing Red: Chuck Jones Center for Creativity To Hold Spring Fundraiser on Saturday, May 14 Sun, 08 May 2011 01:04:20 +0000

Come May 14th a lot of people in this town will be seeing red.  Red dots, and the more the better, at the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity’s Red Dot Auction Fundraiser being held at their location in Old Towne Orange, 131 W. Chapman Avenue from 6:30 – 9:30pm.

Elements of Surprise
Artists from around the world, both emerging and renowned, will contribute artwork created especially for the fundraiser.   They will sign a 10” X 10” canvas on the reverse side, remaining anonymous until the bidders receive their prizes.   This gives the participants the opportunity to own a piece of art that may normally sell for thousands of dollars for far less.  But no one can really lose on this deal– since part of the criteria is asking people to follow their own heart and bid on the art that attracts them most, the piece they get is guaranteed to bring them joy no matter who the artist turns out to be. The red dots allow bidders a $1,000 “Buy It Now” option if the current bid on any piece is below $1,000.  Lots of intrigue, fun and surprises are in store.

Passing on the Vision

Chuck Jones was the creator of such beloved animated figures as Roadrunner, Wile E. Coyote, Marvin Martian, Pepe le Pew—and the “godfather” of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck–and his work is still admired and loved around the world.  His family established the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity as a way to share Chuck’s vision of how imagination and creativity can improve all aspects of life and community.  The Center showcases Chuck’s animation desk as an inspiration to those who visit.  The Center is open for “Drop In And Draw,” and other educational programs and art exhibitions during the year, and they often partner with organizations in the community.  Tracy Tanner, President of the Center’s Council for Creativity wants to see people use their buried creativity to imaginatively approach problem solving in other areas of their lives through what they learn at the Center.  And Cheryl Posner, Executive Director says, “We want to create an exciting gathering at the Red Dot Auction to spur people’s creativity and develop a community hub here in Orange.  It’s the creative spark that transforms our lives.”

One-of-a-Kind Experiences

If the red dots weren’t fun enough, there will also be a live auction that evening for experiences that just can’t be had anywhere else.  A VIP backstage tour of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will be offered, as well as a custom meal prepared in the winning bidder’s home by the retired Chef of the Villa Nova Restaurant, and an opportunity to pick the next limited edition release from the extensive art archives of Chuck Jones.

All that, and food too.  You’ll want to make time to go.  For more information and to purchase tickets, please go to

Hello! Ruby’s Tuesday Tue, 19 Apr 2011 23:18:13 +0000

Ruby’s Streamliner Lounge and Diner in Old Towne Orange Opens April 19th

A few months ago, we had the opportunity to meet with Edward Brandt, the general manager of the new Ruby’s Diner to talk a little about the vision for the new restaurant in Old Towne Orange, located in the historic Santa Fe train depot.   Hearing about their plans was exciting, and after attending a preview opening last week we were not disappointed.

The train depot was built in 1938 and after much thoughtful restoration and remodeling, the restaurant gives you the feel of being a traveler in the 30’s.  You can just imagine getting off the train (now the Orange Metrolink station) and experiencing the ambiance of Ruby’s Streamliner Lounge as you stop in for a drink and relax.  There in the lounge and throughout the diner, antique trains run on tracks above, the décor reminds you of days gone by, and the friendly service invites you back again.  The upscale bar features updated menu items such as swordfish tacos and margaritas, but the diner retains the same popular menu items that customers have come to rely on at Ruby’s.

Retro Dining and Remembrances
There something for everyone here; the parking is plentiful and afterwards you may want to visit the Veteran’s Memorial Fountain in the adjacent park area. It was the brainchild of John Whiteriver, a long time Orange resident and commander of the local American Legion.  Retro dining and remembrances of those who’ve gone before us—that’s what we’re all about in Old Towne Orange, and that’s what this new location provides for us.

Just a little trivia you many find interesting: there are 1004 window panes on the Ruby’s building, and out of those, 225 had to have decades old tint removed.   Lori Nadeau, owner of A Lady’s Touch Facilities Maintenance provided me with this info as she and I talked at one of the “soft openings” preceding the grand opening.  Her ties to the community in Orange are longstanding and Ruby’s holds a special place in her heart: it was her 105 year old “Mawmaw”’s favorite lunch destination.   For her, getting the maintenance account at Ruby’s was another way to stay connected to those memories.

So, hello Ruby’s – and welcome to Old Towne Orange.  No need to say goodbye, though.  We’ll come and go – and we’ll be coming back again!

The Juice on Easter Brunch Fri, 01 Apr 2011 21:16:25 +0000

Citrus City Grille Amps Up Popular Sunday Brunch for the Holiday

For those of you who are brunch-oholics, you know what the upcoming Easter holiday means:  brunch to the 10th power!  The tradition of going to brunch on Easter after a church service or family gathering, or to simply to celebrate the onset of spring is something many of us look forward to every year.  And brunch aficionados know there’s no better place to experience Easter Brunch than at the Citrus City Grille in Old Towne Orange.

The owners are taking their already popular Sunday brunch and bringing it up a few notches.  Yamm! They’re expanding their carving station to include roast turkey and prime rib, including some beautiful seafood and are adding a cheese and fruit bar.  If you’ve been there before, you’ll still see your favorite standbys: eggs benedict, the omelet station and the assortment of freshly baked breads and desserts that regulars have come to depend on.  And it wouldn’t be complete without the bubbly – which will be provided in abundance.

The atmosphere at the “Grille” is high end but friendly, reflecting the owners Steve Xenos and Steve Tsirtsis’ genial personalities, and the energy in the place makes it a fun outing.  Anytime you’re at the Citrus City Grille in Old Towne Orange you get the extra added charm of being in what has been consistently voted the Best Downtown in Orange County.  Easter Sunday should be a beautiful day there so a stroll afterwards makes this a near perfect spring lift.

Launch Your Creativity Event Set for April 9th
Whenever you drop in for tea or a little shopping at the boutique at Paris In A Cup in Old Towne Orange, you’re bound to feel an urge to relate and create.  Relate, because one look at the salon and you’re ready to sit, reminisce and spend time with a good friend or family member over croissants and tea.  Create, because one look at the shop evokes the imagination, brings back old Ella Fitzgerald songs and makes you long for self-expression.

If you’ve been wondering who you can turn to for either one of these important things, April 9th is your day.   Plan to attend the Launch Your Creativity Tea where you can learn to turn your ideas into the business of your dreams.  You’ll be inspired and motivated as you listen to speakers Jacqueline deMontraval, editor of Romantic Homes magazine, and Cheryl Turner, the owner of Paris In A Cup tell the stories of how they followed their dreams, and you’ll be encouraged to ask questions to explore the possibilities for yourself.  Other speakers include Cynthia Wadell of Heavenly Hostess, and Sharon Hughes of Pansy Cottage and Garden.

Greece Was the Word: Citrus City Grille Greek Wine Dinner Flight Review Sun, 21 Nov 2010 23:34:04 +0000

Citrus City Grille, Old Towne OrangeGreece was the word  last Wednesday night as the Citrus City Grille in Orange got an early jumpstart on holiday cheer–complete with Greek dinner, specialty wines and dancing.

Following up on last month’s tango themed dinner where dancers were engaged to demonstrate Argentine routines, owners Steve Xenos and Steve Tsirtisis decided this month to do their own performing, with a little help from their friends. The two personally demonstrated a variety of Greek dances, looking, I must say, terrific! There are few things as poetically masculine as manly men doing the Greek steps together, and these guys did Zorba proud with every stomp and kick. The ladies especially loved it, but the gentlemen got equal time when an adroit belly dancer stepped in to shake her bootie, snapping her veil at a number of lucky guys who were invited to join her. You can imagine the general vibe of fun and camaraderie that permeated the Grille as the dancing progressed and the wine flowed.

And how it flowed! Four courses were offered, each accompanied with generous servings of a different wine tailored to each dish. We started with feta cheese, olives and greek  taramosalata  paired with a refreshing white Moschofilero ’09 wine and then moved to a course that included stuffed dates, sausage wonderfully flavored with orange peel  and an accompanying Nemea/St. George wine from the Hercules Region of Greece. Then lamb chops, roasted lemon potatoes and finally a superb orange cake soufflé with lemon sorbet for dessert.  The accompanying Kortaki-Muskat served with dessert was so good, I was tempted to put some on my wrists and temples and wear it as perfume!

Before long the restaurant became a dance floor, when Steve Xenos taked about romantic nights in Greece and invited couples to join him for some traditional sweetheart coupling.  The magic worked, even extending itself to my husband who demanded we join the other couples, and a delightful time was had by all.

Doing Zorba Proud
Citrus City Grille has an established reputation for the finest of dining, but with events like this it’s also earning a name as the place to go for high class, friendly adult fun.  Steve and Steve know all too well the value of a good cheer in the midst of a stressful work week, and when it comes to the kind of robust, cheerful hosting required to make such nights happen, it just doesn’t get any better than these guys.

Our thanks to them and the always top-notch staff for providing the perfect winter kick off.  We hear there’s an Italian night in the works  for December, so don’t forget to check back for the time, the place, and yes… the motion.

Party in a Box by PJ’s! Wed, 17 Nov 2010 22:54:32 +0000

How many times have you wished you could send a special greeting to a loved one in a galaxy far away, but just couldn’t come up with anything but the standard fare? If you’ve got an out-of-state college student, a spouse on a prolonged business trip or even a freind in the military stationed across the county, Gary Mead of PJ’s Abbey Restaurant has the solution for you.

Gary’s considerable expertise in the family’s restaurant business has birthed an innovative new product called It Makes Me Giggle.  It’s a complete, shippable, party in a box, complete with a delicious cake; it also includes party favors, and get this—a personal audio greeting delivered directly  to your loved one from you.

When you order you get a phone number to call to record your own special greeting.  It’s then placed on a special sound card inside the box with the cake inside (in its own freshness-preserving packaging) and shipped.  Imagine the surprise and the delight when the box is opened! (Note to Gary, this may necessitate inventing a special in-box camera to take a picture.)  Dorothy said “There’s no place like home”.  I say if you can’t be there, there’s nothing like hearing a voice from home.    It’s the thing that memories are made of.

And this awesome party in a box is just the thing to make a special memory.  Visit their website and check it out for yourself.

It just might make you giggle thinking of it.

Citrus City Grille – Argentine Tango Review Fri, 22 Oct 2010 21:31:30 +0000

Okay, so my husband loves… I mean LOVES the tango.  And it was his birithday. So I couldn’t think of a better place to go to celebrate  than The Citrus City Grille for their Argentine Wine Dinner Flight & Tango Show.

We were personally greeted by the owners, who were there for the event, and were seated at a  U-shaped table arrangement where everyone in attendance could view the tango show up-close-and-personal.  The event started with an introduction of the wines chosen for the evening,  a brief description of the menu and an introduction of the dancers who would perform for us.  It was a romantic, candlelit setting which was befitting to the tango, and throughout the evening I couldn’t help but notice the easy conversation taking place. The owners really did set the tone for this by their own genial personalities.  We couldn’t help but feel good.

Of course, good wine,  food spiced just right, and excellent service all contrubuted to the good feeling. Every course was served artfully with a specially chosen wine, and was delicious. While we enjoyed the tastes of Argentina, we were treated to the dancing and a short explanation of how the tango came to be.   I loved every course, but  I have to say my favorite course was the final one, Dulce de Leche with the Malbec Rose ’08  wine.  Our compliments to Chef Sandro Ontivieros and staff, and owners Steve Xenos and Steve Tsirtsis.

Citrus City Grille will be hosting a Greek Wine Dinner Flight  night on November 17th at 7:00pm in the Orange location and it promises to be just as good, if not better, since the owners bring their own Greek heritage to the table!  For more information, please go to their web site:

Paris in a Cup, Jazz and The Afterlife Fri, 22 Oct 2010 17:58:39 +0000

Get your jazz hands ready, put on your beret and head on over to Paris in a Cup on Saturday, October 30th for one really special event!

The popular tea salon will be transforming into a jazz club, French Quarter style, and since it’s the day before our celebrated dress-up day, costumes are encouraged.  I mean, if you’ve ever fantasized about being in the French Quarter, sipping tea, being cool and participating in intellectual tete’-a tete’, dress the part, okay?

Not only will you experience live music from a chanteuse especially brought in for the event, you’ll also have the opportunity to meet author Merrie Destafano, as she talks about her new novel  Afterlife: The Resurrection Chronicles  an Urban Fantasy set in New Orleans.  And her book is included in the price of the event!  Can’t get much better than that.

But,viola! It does get better.  With the tea, lunch and dessert served by the award-winning bakers at Paris in a Cup, you’ll not only be warmed, but filled.  Not bad for an afternoon where  you’ll only have to drive a few miles to be transported away.  You’ll want to go. Trust me.
